Here's a run-down of recorded local rock action in the South Bay area of Southern California dating from between the two world wars (i.e. the hippie war and the punk war). Yes, the area did produce some bigger names - prog-rock "legends" AMBROSIA were from Torrance, while one of the cats in WAR did in fact hail from Harbor City. But there were others too; "regular" folk rocking out between classes at Harbor City College and shitty part-time jobs at Gable House Bowl on Hawthorne Boulevard. The recordings dealt with here are archeological relics from this time/place, which lay the foundation for the uniquely South Bay take on rock consciousness that would flower in the early 1980's. And while the sounds left behind may not be the greatest rock youll ever crack an ear to, no doubt they are among the most obscure. Grab a pick axe and dig in.
